Objective and Contents of the Course

Course Objectives: - To provide knowledge about Turkish maritime history and culture to our students.
- To encourage our students to reseach Turkish maritime history and culture,
- To provide aim to research Turkish Maritime History and heritage and to convey this to future generations and to claim our maritime.
- To describe the effects of maritime developments on the maritime history and the culture.

Course Content: This course enables the students to develop their knowledge of world maritime history and especially Turkish maritime history. In this course, students; the periods in world maritime history, sea power and maritime strategy, seafaring country, world maritime history, the important maritime events of the Seljuk, Ottoman and the Republic of Turkey period and also maritime culture issues are taught.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Students who have successfully completed the course have knowledge of the following subjects: 1. Know the periods of the World Maritime history and describe the events of the Turkish Maritime History in Seljuk, Ottoman and Republican periods.
2) Describe the concepts of maritime power, strategy and maritime state..
3) Makes research on important events in Turkish maritime history.

1) Introduction to Maritime History. The birth of early ships in World Maritime History, The Ancients period, Assyrians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, Sailing vessels, Fighting ships, Triremes age, Merchant ships, Byzantine Naval Ships,
2) Turkish Maritime Activities Before the Ottoman Empire Period. Maritime activities during the Seljuk empire period, Çakabey and The Establishement of the Turkish Navy, Maritime activities during the Anatolian principalities era, Aydınoğlu Umur Bey era.
3) Turkish Maritime Activities During the Establishment Period of the Ottoman Empire. Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi period maritime activities-Karamürsel Bey, I. Murat and Yıldırım Beyazıt period maritime activities, II. Murat period maritime activities.
4) 29 October Turkish Republic Day
5) Turkish Maritime Activities During the Rising Period of the Ottoman Empire. Fatih Sultan Mehmet period maritime activities, The Conquerence of İstanbul in 1453.
